Last week in March

6th grade math: Students will work on lessons 86-88.  We will be focusing on finding the areas of triangles, square roots, and comparing negative numbers.

7th grade math: Students will work on lessons 80-82. We will be focusing on percent increases and doing multiplication and division problems with signed numbers.

8th grade math: Students will work on 77-80. We will focus on rate = distance/time problems. We will also be working on rational expressions and perfecting our scientific notation skills.

7/8 Science: Students will start an electricity and magnetism unit. We will first review the basics to magnets and electricity. We will then explore this concept in a solar energy lab.

6 Science: Students will start an energy unit. We will explore the different forms of energy, and play a matching game to review them.

5 Science: Students will be germinating different vegetable seeds this week. They will be studying to different steps to this process and drawing pictures to illustrate them.

Another week in March..

6th Math: Students took the pretest for Test 12 over the weekend, we will review this Monday and take the test on Tuesday. Students will correcting their last test on Tuesday, and then work on lessons 83-85. We will be focusing on changing percents to decimals, since this is a common struggle for students. We will also focus on operations with fractions and decimals. We will practice these during a game,

7 Math: Students took the pretest for Test 12 over the weekend, we will review this Monday and take the test on Tuesday. Students will correcting their last test on Tuesday, and then work on lessons 78-80. We will focus on negative and positive numbers, and percents. These are areas that students often need more practice in. We will play games and activities to practice these skills.

8 Math: Students took the pretest for Test 12 over the weekend, we will review this Monday and take the test on Tuesday. Students will correcting their last test on Tuesday, and then work on lessons 76-78. We will be focusing on word problems that present some mystery numbers. We will be forming equations that help us figure out those mystery numbers.

7/8 Science: We will be focusing on power this week. Students will read and take notes on the section in class. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday they will preform a lab in small groups. We will then focus on ways the sun can give us power in a solar energy lab.

6 Science: Students will learn about the volcanic activity on other planets. They will have a Socratic Seminar on Tuesday, observed by Dennis Gray. They will watch a few videos and read a few articles online about outer space volcanoes. On Thursday they will review for the quiz on Friday about the past 2 sections on Volcanoes. A study guide will go home Wednesday.

5 Science: Students will be reviewing the parts of monocot and dicot seeds. The quiz will be Wednesday. They got a study guide Monday. Then we will do a lab and germinate our own seeds.

Happy March!

Hello Everyone! Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather we have had the past few days. The details of this week are below.

6th grade Math: Lessons 74-78. Students will be focusing on coordinate geometry by drawing shapes with the specific points given. They will play a game that requires them to compare fractions by converting them to decimals. They will get to see some liquid measurement tools and how to convert from one unit to another. At the end of the week they will explore quadrilaterals and their different names.

7th grade Math: Students will focus on the powers and roots of fractions, graphing inequalities, right circular cylinders, adding and subtracting integers, and implied ratios. They will explore real right circular cylinders by doing an activity with pringles. They will practice their adding and subtracting of integers by playing a game.

8th grade Math: Students will focus on probability this week. We will practice this by playing a few probability games. We will also revisit factoring, and how to simplify trinomials with common factors. Students will also start to prepare a Pi Day video for the rest of the school to view on Pi Day.

7/8 Science: Students will finish the "soaring straws" lab and analyze results. Students will begin reading and taking notes on the fossil fuels section of the book. This will lead us into a conversation on different energy types and the pros and cons to each one. On Friday, we will have a debate over which is the best energy type to use.

6th Science: Students will review Sections 1 and 2 on volcano parts and types of magma. They will complete a study guide and review the answers in a game. On Wednesday they will take the quiz. They will then start exploring the 3 main types of volcanoes. We will do activity to help understand how a mountain can form near a volcano.

5th Science: Students will explore the parts of the flower and their functions. They will label and color diagrams for the flowers. They will watch videos to help add more information to their notes. Students will then focus on pollination by reading, watching videos and discussing the process. They will review this information and have a quiz on Friday over the parts of the flower and pollination. They will receive a study guide on Wednesday for homework to help them prepare.
